A Second Look at Tunbridge, Orange, Vermont Genealogy of Our Family

When a problem is not sufficiently solved, it preys on your subconscious mind. I decided to check out Tunbridge, Orange Vermont's cemeteries of family surnames like Robinson and Durkee. Durkee is on Julia Ann Tuller, Abiathar Smith Robinson's side of the family. My main goal is to discover who Abiathar Smith Robinson's father is. Abiathar married Julia Ann Tuller in 1852 in Tunbridge, Vermont where he was living-alone as far as I know. I was using findagrave.com and checking out the Hunt cemetery of Tunbridge searching Durkee and then Robinson.
Who I found is a James Robinson, one that was not in my name bank. He was born in 1800; just the right age to be Abiathar's father since Abiathar was born in 1829 somewhere in either NY or Vermont. Tunbridge is very important because he was living there in 1852 when he married Julia an on February 29th 1852. Tunbridge, next door to Royalton, Windsor, Vermont where Julia Ann and her Tuller parents lived in 1850, was full of Robinsons and Durkees. Julia Ann's mother, Asenath, was a Durkee.
The only child not on the list below that I inserted was Abiathar. He fit right in the group. It seems more logical that his father should be somewhere nearby to give him a reason for being here.

| Tunbridge, Orange, Vermont In 1850, Julia Ann Tuller lived in Royalton, Windsor, Vermont. The population then was 1,850. Although Joseph Smith, founder of Mormonism, was born in the adjacent town of Sharon near the Royalton boundary, the Joseph Smith Birthplace Memorial lies in the town. She had relatives in Tunbridge, Orange, Vermont next door. Tunbridge had 1,786 people then. Durkees in Tunbridge, Orange, Vermont 1850
There were 25 Durkees in Tunbridge, Vermont on the 1850 census. 14 were adults, the rest children. They probably were at the wedding of Julia Ann Tuller and Abiathar in 1852 when they married in Tunbridge if they were still there. Julia's mother was Asenath Durkee. Durkees were in all parts of Vermont at the time, and there were many.

What happens to Abiathar, then? Before, I had searched in Family Tree. My month was over and I bad ended the subscription, so was searching on Family Search. Well, this ends this perfect father figure.
There were Durkees in Tunbridge. There were so many that I'll have a separate article about them.

Just before dawn on October 16, 1780, the town line of Tunbridge and Royalton was witness to the last major raid of the Revolutionary War in New England. In the "Royalton Raid" three hundred Indians led by British soldiers invaded from Canada along the First Branch of the White River. Part of a series of raids designed to terrorize frontier settlements, the result was the destruction of dozens of homes, crops and livestock necessary to survive the coming winter. Although women and girls were not harmed, 28 men and boys were taken captive and marched to Canada to be imprisoned. In the years that followed, many of the captives made their way back to their families, but some never returned. One resident, Peter Button, was killed in Tunbridge near the Royalton town line along what is Rte. 110 today; an historic marker has been erected there. It was a Button ancestor who married Abiathar and Julia in 1852.
Another town in Orange County is West Fairlee. I just found another James L. Robinson b: 1831 there, 2 years after Abiathar. He was on their 1850 census of September 24th. He was of David Robinson's family and was 19 years old. So in 1850, Abiathar was 21 or would be in December. When 23, he married.
Upon looking again, I found James Robinson born in 1801 in Fairlee, Orange, Vermont on the 1850 census of September 19th at age 49. Mary Robinson b: 1803 was his wife, age 47. Mary Anne b: 1826 was 24, Martha T b: 1828 was 22, Charles K b: 1829 was 21 and Alma b: 1834 was 16. THIS IS MY TUNBRIDGE FAMILY! This was from family search.org. This is the one that doesn't work out, even though he was so close by.
A few days later on September 24, 1850 in West Fairlee, the census taker came to David Robinson's home. He was 53 years old (b: 1797) and was born in Massachusetts. (He'd make a good father for Abaithar.) His wife, Luna, was 51 and born in Vermont. Their children, all born in Vermont, were Preston K 24, Harriett K 21, James L. 19, Abbey 16, Eleanor 14 and Adeline L 10. I found a David to attach this information to. A Vermont David, too.
